As we slowly start to transition back into our offices, it is important to know how to maintain a clean and safe environment for all employees, customers and staff. Here are four tips you can use to ensure your office is free from harmful germs and dirt:
- Wash Your Hands
You’ve probably heard this one more times than you can count, but there’s a reason washing your hands is the number one go-to solution for preventing the spread of germs. However, just a quick rinse won’t cut it. Be sure to practice proper handwashing techniques, even if you are in a rush. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend taking the following steps:
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Make sure the lather covers the backs of your hands, gets between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands thoroughly, using a clean towel or an electric hand dryer.
- Wipe down All Surfaces
It may not always be obvious, but, in a day, we may touch hundreds of different surfaces, all with their own germs and dirt. To prevent the spread, make sure you clean high-touch surfaces regularly. This includes door knobs, keyboards, tables, door and drawer handles, light switches, and countertops.
- Use EPA-registered Cleaning Products
While using soap and water is the tried-and-true cleaning method, it is important to use EPA-registered disinfectants so you can effectively sanitize surfaces. Products such as Lysol Disinfectant Spray are especially effective in destroying bacteria and fungi and can be used on most hard, inanimate surfaces.
- Have a Consistent Cleaning Schedule
It is good to get into the habit of setting a reminder for yourself to clean and disinfect your desk and the items on it, such as your computer, keyboard and telephone. Having a routine will ensure germs and bacteria do not build up on the surfaces you touch daily and eventually get you sick.
